Salad Garden

Lettuce is certainly one of the most worthwhile salad crops to grow. Not only is the quality and flavor of fresh homegrown lettuce far superior to anything one can purchase, but many of the pretty, colorful and unusual varieties which are superb in salads are never found in grocery stores.

Lettuces can be divided rougly into hearting non-hearting types. In the hearting group the main types are the tall cos or ‘romaine’ lettuce, and the flat ‘cabbage’ lettuce. Nonhearting types include the loose-leaf ‘Salad Bowl” varities and stem lettuce. As well as the green lettuces, there are also some very decorative red and bronze.

Lettuce types: Cos (Romaine), cabbage head, loose-leaf, celtuce.

Lettuces normally need an open situation, but in the height of summer or in hot climates can be grown in light shade. They can also be intercropped between taller plants, provided they have adequate light and are not cramped.

Like all leafy vegetables, they do best grown fast fertile soil with plenty of moisture.
